The Holiday Market is typically the best time of year for retail, even in a sluggish economy. You don't have to make hand-beaded snowmen or mistle-toewarmers to catch some of that holiday money. There are a few simple things you can do with your very own products to make them more appealing to holiday shoppers.
1. There is something for everyone on Etsy.
If you make the most non gift-y item out there, you can still offer free gift wrapping, express shipping and personalized gift notes to your buyers. People are always looking for unique items for their eclectic friends, remind shoppers that your non-gift gifts make a great present.
2. Focus on lower priced items.
While I really want you to sell that $1000.00 reclaimed leather dog collar, this is a frugal season. Offer a variety of prices in your shop; give buyers the opportunity to purchase all their gifts from you by having a range of value in your shop.
2a. With the lower prices also offer combined shipping. Find cost effective ways of creating bargains that will entice your buyers and improve your holiday business.
3. Create a gift set or gift baskets.
Shoppers love a good deal and a simple gift. If you sell jewelry, pair a necklace with some earrings, soap sellers, make a "just for him" basket with shaving soap and skin soother. Find a way to combine a few of your items and offer them at a slightly discounted price and be sure to use the word gift in your listing titles, remind buyers that your shop offers great give-able goods.
4. List "purchase by" dates in your shop announcement.
Even if you've only had one sale, make sure your shop looks professional and important. Let buyers know they need to buy your work before (insert date) in order to receive it for the holidays. Again, offer express shipping or free upgraded shipping with larger orders and don't forget the gift wrap.
5. If you make holiday themed items, now is the time for the push.
If you are not getting any views, be sure your photos are stellar and you are listing often enough to stay fresh. Those of you already experiencing some success, don't forget the showcases on Etsy's main page. I've never sold holiday themed items but better to push them now then offer huge sales on reindeer hats in April.
6. Stay positive.
If nothing sells you have a great collection of gift items for friends and family. :) Holiday selling is a gamble, if Etsy isn't making you millions don't forget to sign up for your local craft shows and markets. Get out, meet your buyers and get some face to face feedback on your craft. Real world selling is a wonderful way to test your market. I recommend it for everyone.
Happy Holiday Sales :)
